Ultra-high-tempo Glenville State fired in 15 3-point goals and forced 22 turnovers en route to a 122-98 women's basketball victory over West Virginia State Thursday at Fleming Hall.
The Mountain East Conference-leading Pioneers (19-2, 14-1) had six double-figure scorers, led by Tasia Bristow's 23 points and 21 by Tiffani Huffman. Jessica Parsons dished out 10 assists, Kenyona Simmons had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Aesha Peters had 10 points and 13 boards.
With their system of five players subbing in and out, the Pioneers were credited with 60 bench points. Glenville shot 43.9 percent, but that translated into 43 baskets in 98 attempts. State was 38 of 81 for 46.9 percent.
The Yellow Jackets (13-9, 9-7) also had six double-figure scorers, led by Amiea Summers with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Shealyn Shafer added down 13 points as State scored 60 points in the paint.
Glenville led 65-48 at the half.
UC WOMEN WIN: LeAnne Ross netted 15 points as the University of Charleston women's basketball team posted a 55-42 Mountain East Conference win over West Virginia Wesleyan Thursday at Eddie King Gymnasium.
Nichole Perry added 13 points for the Golden Eagles (14-6, 10-6 MEC). Brittany Williams scored 11 points to lead the Bobcats (2-17, 0-15).
WVU WOMEN'S SOCCER: West Virginia women's soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown announced the addition of six student-athletes for the 2014 season. The signees are Michaela-Batya Abam (Houston), Toryn Broadwater (Midlothian, Va.), Heather Keleiohi (San Diego), Kelly LaPorte (Geneva, Ill.), Carla Portillo (Mississauga, Ontario) and Macy Stalnaker (Butler, Pa.).
HERD CAMP: The Marshall baseball team will hold a strength and conditioning camp from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 24. Participants must be ages 12 and up. The skills and methods taught will be the same used by Marshall players and will focus on weightlifting, running form, off-season arm conditioning, arm maintenance and agility drills.
