CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Chris Thomas scored 20 points, including a critical 8-0 run, as Marshall upset Charlotte 59-56 Saturday night at Halton Arena.
South Charleston High graduate Pierria' Henry had the 49ers' last try to tie it, as his 3-point attempt rimmed out with seconds left. Thomas grabbed the rebound and ran the time out.
Kareem Canty was the game's leading scorer with 21 points, including the Herd's last basket, a clutch 16-foot jumper for a 59-53 lead. But he then had the ball stolen which, after a possession with missed 3s and long rebounds, ended in a Shawn Lester 3-pointer.
Tamrom Manning failed to inbounds the ball with 19.4 seconds left, but Lester and Henry missed 3s in that frantic final possession.
The Herd (9-17, 3-8) fell behind 30-19 in the first half, as Henry dished out seven of his nine assists early on. But Thomas took the game in his hands, scoring two three-point plays and another basket on a strong drive to cut the lead to 30-27.
A bit later, Canty scored five straight, including a 3-pointer that gave the Herd a 34-32 lead -- one it did not relinquish. When Thomas hit a putback layup at the buzzer, MU led 36-32 at the break.
