Junior guard Nia Nolan scored a career-high 35 points, but it wasn't enough as the WVU Tech women's basketball team dropped a 93-77 decision to Bluefield (Va.) College Monday night at the Baisi Center in Montgomery.
Freshman guard Elizabeth Evans recorded 16 points for the Golden Bears (9-13). Bluefield (13-13) was led by senior guard Teqa McNeal, who produced a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
MEC HONORS: Charleston's Xavier Humphrey and West Liberty's C.J. Hester have been named Mountain East Conference men's basketball players of the week.
Humphrey averaged 28.5 points as UC defeated Urbana and Notre Dame College. Hester averaged 20.5 points and six rebounds as the No. 6 Hilltoppers recorded wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and regionally ranked Glenville State.
Wheeling Jesuit sophomore Breanna Butler has been named the Mountain East Conference women's basketball player of the week after leading the Cardinals to a pair of conference wins last week. Butler averaged 21 points, 8.5 rebounds three assists in wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State.
Concord's Ryan Weatherholtz has been named the Mountain East Conference baseball pitcher of the week, while teammate Joey Miller earned conference player of the week honors. The two helped the Mountain Lions take two out of three games against Pitt-Johnstown over the weekend. Weatherholtz allowed just three runs over eight innings with four strikeouts and no walks to pick up his first victory of the season. Miller went 9 for 13 with four runs, two home runs and seven RBI in three games.
West Virginia Wesleyan's Jacqui Omichinski has been named the Mountain East Conference softball pitcher of the week, while Fairmont State's Ericka Aversa has been named player of the week. Omichinski went 2-0 with wins over IUP and Chowan. Aversa drove in six runs and batted .385 to help the Falcons go 3-2 over the weekend at the Shaw University Challenge.
WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia women's basketball team moved up to No. 11 in this week's Associated Press poll. The Mountaineers, who were ranked No. 13 last week, went 2-0 last week in Big 12 play, defeating No. 12 Oklahoma State and Kansas State.
