Cold shooting dooms Herd

NORFOLK, Va. - In its final regular-season road game, the Marshall men's basketball team had a 37-percent shooting performance against Conference USA newcomer Old Dominion and dropped a 70-63 decision to the Monarchs Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Monarchs now sit at 14-15 overall (8-6 C-USA), while the Thundering Herd drops to 9-20 overall (3-11 C-USA). It's just the fourth time in school history the Herd has had 20 or more losses in a season.

Both sides struggled offensively early on as the opposing defenses limited good shot opportunities and forced turnovers. Trailing 21-17, Marshall went on a 9-0 run that spanned 2:50, putting the Herd on top 26-21 with 3:02 remaining until the half.

At the halftime break the Herd led 27-25 despite having shot 10 of 26 from the field (38.5 percent). Marshall's defense found success, forcing six Monarch turnovers in the first 20 minutes and procuring four steals.

The Monarchs went on a 9-1 run early in the second half, prompting Marshall coach Tom Herrion to call a time out with 16:21 to play and Old Dominion leading 36-31.

Marshall cut the deficit to 64-59 and 34 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer from Kareem Canty, but the Herd would get no closer. With the seven-point defeat, Marshall has now lost 15 games this year by 10 or fewer points.

On the night, Marshall went 20 for 54 (37 percent) from the field and 6 of 15 (40 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. Canty finished with a game-high 24 points in 39 minutes on the floor, while Chris Thomas added 17, bouncing back from a two-point night against Middle Tennesee State on Saturday.

Old Dominion was paced by Aaron Bacote with a team-high 22 points, while Richard Ross recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Monarchs' victory breaks a 4-4 tie in the all-time series between the programs.

The Herd will return home for a pair of games to close out the regular season, starting with a contest with East Carolina at 2 p.m. Sunday.
