RIPLEY - Keion still has the Wright stuff.
Sophomore running back Keion Wright covered 174 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Capital to a 17-7 win Friday night.
Cougar coach Jack Woolwine says it wasn't necessarily in the game plan to give the running back a whopping 38 carries. "We were just going with what was working for us," he explained.
The teams combined for a game-slowing 18 penalties for 181 yards. All those flags took their toll, according to Woolwine.
"It's hard to get any rhythm going on offense when you have that many penalties,'' he said. "It's like one step forward and two steps back."
Capital got its first touchdown on a 2-yard run by Wright with 2:08 remaining in the first half. The score capped an 11-play, 63-yard drive.
Forcing a quick three-and-out by the Viking offense, the Cougars were able to tack on a field goal before halftime. After missing on two earlier attempts, Jarred Newhouse converted on a 34-yarder.
Ripley closed the deficit to 10-7 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. The Vikings moved the ball 85 yards on 14 plays. The final 8 yards came on a touchdown pass from Seth Parsons to Scotty Ullom.
The Cougars put together a game-clinching 75-yard march midway through the fourth quarter. More importantly, the drive consumed more than eight minutes off the game clock.
Capital (3-1) had 286 yards of total offense as quarterback Joe Beane hit on 10-of-15 attempts for 92 yards.
Ripley (1-3) had only 24 yards on 20 rushes. Senior quarterback Parsons completed 14-of-18 passing attempts for 132 yards. Ullom had six receptions for 73 yards and Matt Mellert caught five for 38.
The game was delayed for more than 20 minutes when Capital junior Tre Hicks sustained a serious injury. He was transported to CAMC. The Cougar coaching staff reported that Hicks did have movement in his extremities.
Capital will play host to Woodrow Wilson on Friday while Princeton will travel to Ripley.
