"He tells us the truth every time," Rae said. "He tells us, straight up, what the deal is and he says get it out of our mind and do what we have to, and that's win games. And that's what we're going to try to continue doing."

  • Stat You Might Have Missed, Part I: After its 59-24 win at Southern Mississippi, Marshall has scored 302 points and yielded "only" 291 this season.

OK, you knew the offense has been explosive and the defense has often imploded, but this is the obscure part: Marshall's "PF" is exceeding its "PA" for the first time since the 2009 season opener. That was a 31-28 win over Southern Illinois, a small margin quickly wiped out by a 52-10 loss at Virginia Tech.

That team finished with a 33-point deficit. The 2010 team was minus-95, winning its five games by just a combined 49 points. Last year's ended up going minus-88 despite its 7-6 record, thanks to lopsided losses at Ohio, Houston and Tulsa.

  • Stat You Might Have Missed, Part II: Can the Herd buy a missed field goal by its opponent?

So far, nine have been made in as many attempts, including the 51-yarder by Southern Mississippi's Corey Acosta that bounced over the crossbar. All other foes except West Virginia have hit 3-pointers between 22 and 40 yards.

Adding a field goal by Florida International in last year's bowl game, the streak is 10 field goals over eight games. The last miss against the Herd came from East Carolina's Mike Barbour, who went short on a go-ahead attempt from 52 yards in the fourth quarter of the regular-season finale.

That was a surprise. In the second quarter, Barbour not only hit a stadium-record 57-yarder, he one-upped that by hitting again from 58.
