CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Shawn Smith, a 6-foot-6 junior-college transfer from City College of San Francisco, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play basketball for Marshall.

Smith stands to be a shooting guard or small forward when he joins the Thundering Herd in 2013-14. Smith, who will have two years of eligibility at Marshall, is the Herd's first commitment of the early signing period, which began Wednesday.

He played his high school ball at McClatchy High in San Francisco, where he averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists as a senior. He was a first-team selection in the All-Metro Conference in that year, 2010-11.

"He is a very versatile player, who plays with a great motor and energy," said Herd coach Tom Herrion.
