HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Marshall trailed by as many as six points in the second half, but an 18-0 run helped propel the Thundering Herd to an 80-58 win against the University of the District of Columbia at the 2K Sports Classic Friday at Hofstra University.
Marshall (2-1) trailed UDC 48-42 with 15:49 remaining before outscoring the Firebirds 38-10 to finish the game, including the 18-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes.
Senior forward Dennis Tinnon, who came off the bench for the first time in his college career, scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Senior center Nigel Spikes also had 12 rebounds along with eight points and four blocked shots.
Marshall outrebounded UDC 51-26, including 18 offensive rebounds that the Herd turned in to 25 second-chance points.
Junior DeAndre Kane finished with 16 points, nine assists and five rebounds while fellow junior Elijah Pittman, making the first start of his career at Marshall, scored 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
For UDC, Quasim Jones led the Firebirds with 12 points to go with six assists and four rebounds.
Marshall plays its next game of the 2K Sports Classic at 2:30 p.m. today when the Herd takes on South Dakota State.
