HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - DeAndre Kane's triple-double of 33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists weren't enough as Marshall lost to Hofstra 103-100 in double overtime.
Shaquille Stokes had 26 points and Stevie Mejia had 22 as the Pride scored the first six points in the second overtime to fend off the Thundering Herd. Marshall (2-3) had a tough three-game stay on the Hofstra campus, beating Division II District of Columbia and losing on a late basket to South Dakota State.
"Another loss, didn't get the job done defensively, gave up 103 points," said Herd coach Tom Herrion. "Inexcusable. I know it's double overtime, but we're not good enough defensively right now - and to get outrebounded by 14 is very, very disturbing to me."
There was plenty else to disturb Herrion, including a 64-51 deficit with 9:19 left and a 71-59 shortfall at the 6:57 mark. But Chris Martin hit two key 3-pointers in the final minutes, one to cut the margin to 78-77 and the second to tie the game at 80 with 1:31 left. Elijah Pittman sent the game to overtime at 85-all, hitting a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left.
Hofstra (3-2) gave Marshall an opening in the first overtime when David Imes missed the second free throw to leave the game tied at 89 with 23 seconds left. Kane missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, however.
Stokes scored the Pride's first six points, including a 3-pointer, to give Hofstra a 95-89 lead in the second extra session. The Herd got within 101-100 on a Kane 3-pointer, but never had the ball with a chance to tie or go ahead.
The Herd shot 43.8 percent, hitting just 10 of 33 attempts from 3-point range. Free-throw shooting was mediocre again, 26 of 42 for 61.9 percent. Hofstra outrebounded Marshall 57-43, 21-15 on the offensive boards.
There were 69 fouls whistled, 39 on the Herd. Two MU players fouled out, six finished with four fouls and Dennis Tinnon and Nigel Spikes were limited by foul trouble.
Hofstra shot 57 foul shots, hitting 40.
"I thought we never adjusted to the whistle," Herrion said. "They had as many free throws attempted as they had rebounds in the game. It's hard to do that."
Marshall returns to action at home Saturday against Nevada. Tip-off time at Cam Henderson Center is 7 p.m.
