Roundup: Parkersburg takes swim title

South Charleston's Austin Green won the boys 100-yard breaststroke Monday with a time of 59.88 seconds at the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational swim meet at the Teays Valley YMCA.

The Parkersburg swim team cruised to the girls division title, narrowly earned the boys division title and took the overall combined team title at the Tri-County YMCA Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Scott Depot on Monday.

The Big Reds secured a 52-point win over Winfield on the girls side, but only edged Hurricane by eight points on the boys side. In combined team scores, Parkersburg bested Hurricane 403-296.

Junior Austin Green of South Charleston picked up wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, while junior Christopher Canterbury notched victories in the 100-yard free. The Black Eagles team also secured an important six-second win in the 200-yard medley relay featuring Green, Canterbury, Landon Simpson and Adam Poe.

The Hurricane aquatics team recorded a few wins at the meet, including Claire Coleman (girls) and Zach Shurow (boys) in the 100-yard fly, as well as team victories in the boys' 200-yard free relay and boys' 400-yard free relay.

  • PREP BASKETBALL: Woodrow Wilson took over the top spot in the Class AAA Associated Press boys high school basketball poll Monday.

    Martinsburg was second, followed by Fairmont Senior, Hedgesville, which was No. 1 last week, and Morgantown to round out the top five. South Charleston was sixth and George Washington eighth among Kanawha Valley schools.

    Bluefield remained No. 1 in Class AA followed by Magnolia, Sissonville, Wyoming East and Tug Valley. St. Marys moved to the top spot in Class A followed by Midland Trail, Madonna, which was No. 1 last week, Charleston Catholic and Parkersburg Catholic. (See Page 2B for polls.)

  • Greenbrier East and Scott moved up to No. 1 in AAA and AA, respectively, in the Class AAA AP girls poll. Wheeling Central remained in the top spot in A.
  • South Charleston, which was in the top spot since the preseason poll, slipped to No. 2 in AAA, followed by Bridgeport, Wheeling Park and Morgantown. Scott, which ended previously No. 1 Summers County's 105-game winning streak over the weekend, is No. 1 in AA followed by Summers, Westside, Lincoln and Braxton County. St. Joseph is second in A, followed by Williamstown, St. Marys and Trinity.

  • GUNNERS BASKETBALL: Lionel Armstead poured in 31 points as the Charleston Gunners handed Rochester (N.Y.), the defending Premier Basketball League champions, its first loss of the season Monday afternoon with a 119-111 victory.

    Armstead nailed six 3-pointers and made several clutch shots in the fourth quarter for the Gunners (2-2). Vince Goldsberry turned in his second straight triple-double with 19 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds for Charleston while Will Collins added 21 points, James Helton 18 and Jamaal Caterina 13. The Gunners' Colby Batiste grabbed 10 boards to go along with eight points.

    Jamaal Davis led the RazorSharks (3-1) with 22 points. The Gunners return home at 7 p.m. Sunday to take on Scranton Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) at St. Albans High School.
