Ansted's streak lives on.
Wheeling Central lost for the first time since 2005 Friday night, falling at Shadyside (Ohio) 22-14.
It halted a 35-game winning streak for the Maroon Knights, stopping them one short of the state-record victory run by Ansted, a former Fayette County school, from 1970-73.
Central had beaten Shadyside 45-21 last season en route to its second straight 14-0 record and a fourth consecutive state Class A championship. The Knights had not lost since a 21-7 setback to Linsly on Oct. 29, 2005.
Ansted consolidated with Nuttall to form Midland Trail High School in 1976.
It was the second time in three years a long West Virginia winning streak was cut short of Ansted's mark.
Morgantown had a 28-game run ended in 2006.
