Prep football roundup: Winfield edges Logan for first win

Taylor Farley threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Christian Powers in the second overtime to give Winfield its first win of the season Friday night, 34-28 over host Logan.

Matt Wilton of Winfield and Josh Wilson of Logan both had field goals blocked in the first overtime and Logan quarterback Derrick Perrin threw an interception in the second overtime, setting the stage for Farley's game-winner.

Winfield dodged a bullet late in the fourth quarter after Logan (2-4) tied the game on a Perrin-to-Drew Zess 25-yard score.

The Generals (1-5) drove down the field only to see Farley throw an interception that was returned to midfield. Wilson lined up for a field goal that would have given Logan the win, but it missed wide left, forcing the game into OT.

Farley finished with 70 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns and threw for two more scores on 11-for-21 passing.

  • CAPITAL 30, GREEN. EAST 12: Capital's defense was dominant on the road, not allowing Greenbrier East to cross the 50-yard line until the fourth quarter.
  • No. 8 Capital (6-1) pushed its winning streak to six games, all by double-digit margins, after a season-opening loss to George Washington.

Jarred Newhouse kicked off the scoring by nailing a 19-yard field goal in the first quarter. Capital took a 16-0 advantage into the half after a Kevin Lee 21-yard run and a James Woods 25-yard catch from Joe Beane.

Woods finished with 118 yards rushing on 22 carries and two receptions for 26 yards and two touchdowns, while Lee carried five times for 48 yards. Nathan Lilly was a bright spot for East (1-6), posting two fourth-quarter touchdowns and gaining 83 yards on 15 carries.

  • PT. PLEASANT 41, POCA 12: In a battle between the two top rushing backs in the Cardinal Conference, neither the Dots' Caleb Arthur nor the Black Knights' Allan Wasonga disappointed. But Wasonga's team reigned supreme at home.
  • Wasonga churned for 183 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown, and he was supported by strong efforts from Derek Mitchell (eight carries, 78 yards, two TDs) and Nathan Roberts (eight for 27 yards, two TDs). The Knights rushed for 332 yards.

That Taylor Farley guy is a pretty decent high school quarterback. He plays tough all the time. He can run and pass. He makes good decisions.

I don't know what grade he is in, but nothing fazes him. His team may not be having a great season, but Farley is holding up his share of the load. He keeps defenses back on their heels guessing what he will do next.
