Quarterback Taylor Norman threw three touchdown passes as George Washington closed out the regular season with a 42-12 victory over Woodrow Wilson Friday night in Beckley.
The No. 3 Patriots (9-1), who won their eighth in a row, rolled for nearly 300 yards out of the backfield, getting the most from Felix Mollett, who carried the ball 11 times for 106 yards, and Greg Jones, who contributed 95 yards on 13 carries.
George Washington outgained Woodrow Wilson 293-167 on the ground.
"We played well tonight,'' said GW coach Steve Edwards Jr., "and I was proud of the way we played up front. We were physical and the kids played their keys real well. They came ready to play. That's one of the things you're always concerned about when you travel and play away, especially when you play a real good football team, which they are.''
GW's Shaquille Williams made the most of his opportunities, breaking a 48-yard touchdown run on his one touch from the backfield, and then scoring another TD on his only reception.
Matt Johnson closed out the scoring for the Patriots with a 45-yard touchdown reception, and then returning a punt 70 yards for a score.
Norman completed only three passes in the game, but all went for touchdowns.
"We didn't have to throw that much tonight,'' Edwards said, "which is OK, too. We're not into putting up big numbers. We're just into doing what we can do, executing the offense and defense so we can win the game. I'm proud of them for that. There's not much selfishness in this team, if any at all.''
The Patriots have relied on a stingy defense all season and Friday night was no different as they contained the Flying Eagles to just over 200 yards of total offense.
The Eagles' Vashawn Woods carried the ball 13 times, but the star back was held to just 61 yards from scrimmage. Rakeem Fowlkes added 48 yards on four carries.
Ryan Stafford went 8-for-22 passing for 43 yards, including a 1-yard scamper for a touchdown for the Flying Eagles (5-4).
TOLSIA 24, WINFIELD 21: Quarterback Derrick Robertson ran for a pair of second-half touchdowns to propel the host Rebels (5-4) to a comeback victory, snapping the Generals' three-game winning streak.
Winfield led 21-6 after Taylor Farley's TD pass to Christian Powers with 4:51 left in the first half, but Tolsia finished with 18 unanswered points to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Rebels were ranked 21st in Class AA this week.
