Hurricane Invitational among top early cross country meets

Most of southern West Virginia's Class AAA and AA-A cross country teams are expected to participate in the annual Hurricane Invitational Aug. 28 at Valley Park next to the Wave Pool.

It's one of several season-opening meets around the state.

Elementary and middle school runners also will compete in the Hurricane meet, contributing to a turnout that should reach about 600, said Hurricane assistant coach Bill Posey, who has been working with meet director Steve Caldwell.

"All the schools that have programs in this area usually show up,'' said Posey. "The Huntington schools will be up, and I know Parkersburg High isn't coming, but Parkersburg South will probably be down.''

Last year's event drew boys and girls teams from 20 high schools and 16 middle schools.

The 5-kilometer course is the same one used for the Region 4 competition in October, giving the runners a chance to prepare for the postseason.

"It's a pretty tough course,'' said Posey. "When you look at it, you would think it's fairly flat. But it's like when people talk about a false flat in bicycle racing, you're really climbing, but you don't realize it as you're going up. There are a lot of those on the course, and on the back side, there are two nice hills that get your attention.''

Race officials added the elementary school race last year, borrowing the idea from Preston High School's Mountaintop Combo, which  will take place Sept. 11 near Kingwood.

"I like to get those kids involved,'' said Posey. "And I think it's good that we let the middle school kids race at the same time as the high school kids are racing.''
