In AAA boys, Jefferson found itself trailing upstart SC much of the day, but the defending state champion Cougars were well-stocked in the final few events, many of which had no SC entries.

Jefferson's Brandon Doughty took the 800 to complement the 3,200 he won in record time on Friday, and the Cougars also led the meet-ending 4x400. They ended with 108 points to SC's 76.

"Our team was at full strength,'' said Jefferson coach Craig Hunter, "but we didn't run some people in some events -- we held Doughty and [Eric] Graf out of the mile and Brandon in the 4x8. We wanted to see what some of the other kids could do in stiff competition so when we hopefully get the chance to come back here for states, we can see where we might put those other kids to score some points.

"We never try to get into a comfort zone because we tell the kids to be happy with a win, but never be satisfied. We can always get better.''

Unranked South Charleston won four events in the meet, with Josh Coats taking the 100 hurdles and Emerson Gagnon the high jump on Saturday. Double winners besides Doughty were Cam Viney of Elkins (400, 300 hurdles) and A.J. White of Hurricane (shot, disc).

Buckhannon-Upshur got 60 points alone from Godwin and Karissa Knabenshue, who took both weight throws. Godwin led the 100 hurdles (15.47), 300 hurdles (45.56) and long jump (17-51/4) on Saturday after winning the high jump at 5-6 Friday,

"We had a lot of girls get their best times or best distances,'' said B-U coach Jackie Zuliani. "We've improved, and that's what we want to keep doing.

"We always want to come here for that purpose -- running the same schedule [as the state meet] and getting used to the track and the new facilities pre-state meet. Hopefully, everybody here will qualify and we do it all again in a couple weeks.''

Letitia Propst of Elkins pulled off a distance triple in girls AAA, adding the 800 and 1,600 Saturday to the 3,200 title she took Friday.

Point Pleasant won its second straight boys AA crown, also coming from behind in the final event. The Black Knights, trailing Tyler 96-91, led the 4x400 and earned the team title when the Silver Knights ran sixth.

Double winners in the boys AA meet were Will Shaffer of Scott (800, 3,200) and Hunter LeMasters of Tyler (high jump, pole vault).

In girls AA, Tyler won four events Saturday to rally past Berkeley Springs and grab the championship by a 1221/3-891/3 margin.

Three double winners emerged in that meet -- Adrian Cunningham of Poca (200, 300 hurdles), Shannon Rutherford of Wayne (400, 800) and Andrea Porter of Point Pleasant (1,600, 3,200).
