Capital takes road show to St. Albans
It wasn't the way you might choose to begin your season - hopping on a bus for a two-hour trip across state, then waiting out an hour-plus lightning delay to start the game - but it all worked out for Capital last week.
Hensley was pleased with first-year QB Trevor Rumberg, who threw for 105 yards and two TDs and ran for 35 yards against St. Albans.
"That was a plus for us,'' Hensley said. "A guy who's never played before, you don't know how he's going to do, but he handled the situation pretty well. He made some mistakes, but hopefully we've worked with him this week to get better.''
Hurricane (1-0) at Nitro (0-1): The Redskins opened with a bang last week, stopping Putnam County rival Winfield 44-7 as Austin Hensley threw for 314 yards and three TDs.
Nitro saw its three-year losing streak reach 16 with a 48-34 loss at Poca, but the Wildcats did amass 438 yards of offense, with Chris Moody passing for 252 yards and three scores and Ethan Clark grabbing 11 balls for 160 yards and two TDs.
Sissonville (1-0) at Liberty Raleigh (1-0): Perhaps the most surprising matchup of 1-0 teams in the state, considering the teams they beat - Sissonville topped Chapmanville (AA semifinalist last year) and Liberty beat Westside (9-2 and No. 3 playoff seed).
"We're in a good position right now,'' said Indians coach Eddie Smolder. "We worked our tails off all year to be in the position we're in. Liberty has our full focus; they beat us the last two years, so our kids would like to flip the switch on them.''
Winfield (0-1) at Ripley (0-1): The Generals won this game last year with a denying defense, holding the Vikings to 77 net yards in a 23-3 victory.
Herbert Hoover (0-1) at Chapmanville (0-1): It's early to be thinking playoffs, but the loser of this game will have a tough time making hay in AA at 0-2.
Poca (1-0) at Nicholas County (0-1): The Dots won a 48-34 shootout with Nitro in their opener, while the Grizzlies saw a late drive fizzle and fell to Greenbrier West 24-22.

The Cougars opened with a 42-21 win at Greenbrier East, giving them momentum and confidence heading into tonight's 7:30 game at St. Albans (0-1).
"There were so many things out of our control we had to fight through,'' Carpenter said, "but we were excited.''
Capital also went the entire way last week with a freshman quarterback, Tyhree Pratt, owing to the indefinite suspension of junior Carrington Morris, who started four games last year.
Coach Jon Carpenter said Morris will be back "at some point,'' but it's unlikely he'll return this week, meaning Pratt gets more work.
"He was calm and cool the whole night,'' Carpenter said of Pratt, who hit on 10 of 16 passes last week for 219 yards and three touchdowns. "It was really neat. He made good decisions. He was going to play a bunch of snaps anyway. He just got to play a few more than we thought.''
St. Albans opened with a 44-27 setback at Riverside, but did put up 415 yards of total offense in the new spread attack of first-year coach Steve Stoffel Jr.
Riverside (1-0) at South Charleston (0-1): Two more teams who piled up the yards last week tangle at Oakes Field.The Warriors put up 431 yards in their home win against St. Albans, and the Black Eagles gained 419 on George Washington in a 36-24 loss.
"I'm worried every time I face them,'' said Riverside coach Ralph Hensley of the Eagles. "They have all those skill people that can run. We hope we can keep closer to them than last year. We did until the fourth quarter, then they blocked a punt and we fell apart after that.''
