Roundup: Hurricane boys, girls earn soccer shutouts

  • SISSONVILLE 9, POCAHONTAS 0: Lydia Murray, Karli Pinkerton and Madison Jones each scored two goals in the shutout victory for visiting Sissonville. Mary Schmeck, Taylor Rhodes and Jessica Layne added goals for the Indians (7-2), who outshot Pocahontas 16-1.
  • RIVERSIDE 2, OAK HILL 1: Hannah Leftwich found the back of the net for Riverside when she volleyed a rebound off Oak Hill goalie Brianna Ovalle for the road win. Megan Buchko also scored for the Warriors (4-2-1). Haley McDowell had the lone goal for Oak Hill. Ovalle stopped five shots for the Red Devils (2-3-2), and Lauren Sparks and Sam Powers combined for seven saves.
  • CAPITAL 6, NITRO 0: Alley Reeves netted three goals and Katie Crowder had two goals as host Class AAA No. 8 Capital upset No. 6 Nitro. The final goal credited to the Cougars was an own goal. Michelle Newhouse made two saves for Capital (7-2)

  • SENIOR GOLF: Huntington's Steve Fox shot a 1-over-par to win the West Virginia Senior Series event at Raven Golf Club on Thursday. Fox's score of 73 beat Vienna's Scott Bibbee by a stroke, with Huntington's Mike Powers taking third with a 76.

    Charleston's Allen Bailes won the Gold Division and was the only player to shoot under par in any division with a 3-under 69. Mineral Wells' Jim Mason had 74 to win the Silver Division.

  • AREA BOWLING: Galaxy Lanes' Friday Fellowship league meets and starts today at 6:20 p.m. The Saturday Youth league starts at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, and the Mixed league begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

  • WVC FOOTBALL: Glenville (1-1) quarterback Darold Hughes was 13-of-20 passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns as Glenville State defeated visiting Fairmont State 41-21 in their annual "Battle for the Bit" game..

    For Fairmont (0-2), Matt Wilmer returned a kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown and freshman Trevor Malnick led the Falcons with six tackles.
