Ripley held off Parkersburg by 12 points to win the Class AAA boys division at the Chik-fil-A Invitational cross country meet in Mineral Wells. Ripley finished with 61 points.
Parkersburg won the AAA girls title in with 45 points, while Scott won the AA-A girls division (61) and Belpre, Ohio (108) won the AA-A boys title.
George Washington's Matthew Brafford won with a time of 16:03 in Class AAA. Maggie Drazba of St. Marys set a course record with a time of 18:01. (For results, see Page 2D.)
WVU SPORTS: The No. 21-ranked West Virginia University cross country team had four runners finish in the top 25 and finished fourth at the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational Saturday in State College, Pa.
Sophomore transfer Savanna Plombon was the top finisher for the Mountaineers, placing 14th with a 6k time of 22:07.
UC SOCCER: Rob Vincent found the back of the net as Charleston earned a 1-1 draw with Shippensburg (Pa.) on Saturday. Oli Templeton scored for Shippensburg. UC keeper Sean Teepen stopped seven shots for the Golden Eagles (2-1-1).
TECH SOCCER: The WVU Tech women's soccer team lost to Notre Dame College 2-1 Friday in Charleston. Lauren Kobylik and Rachel Taylor scored for Notre Dame. Carla Carvalho scored the lone goal for the Golden Bears.
AREA GOLF: John Duty Jr. and Sam O'Dell led following the first round of the state Two-Man Scramble Championship at Twisted Gun Golf Club in Wharncliffe.
Duty and O'Dell, the 2009 champions, hold a two-stroke lead at 10-under-par over two teams - Pat Carter and Steve Fox, and Jim Grimmett and Tad Tomblin, who both sit at 8 under. The final round begins at 10 a.m. today.
