BUFFALO - For all of his success on the field, there's a lot of pizzazz that surrounds Buffalo quarterback Levi Jordan.

For starters, he makes more wardrobe changes during the course of a game than Cher at a sold-out concert.

The senior alternates between three pairs of shoes, one while playing quarterback, one while kicking extra points, and one while kicking off and has mastered the art of changing them and getting back onto the field before the play clock runs out.

In the Bison's 36-8 win over Richwood on Friday night, he even had to switch shoulder pads after breaking his own.

"My shoulder pads broke, so we had to switch them real quick," Jordan said nonchalantly. "I've just gotten used to [changing shoes] for a few years now."

And then there is that beard.

As in the one Jordan has been working on since the summer, which is thick and robust enough to leave most men, including Richwood coach Jason Rogers, feeling slightly intimidated.

"I just talked to him after the game about it," Rogers said. "One of these days maybe I can be as much of a man as he is but I tell you what, anybody that throws the ball like he does can wear his beard anyway he wants to."

Indeed, Rogers and his Lumberjacks got a first-hand look at Jordan's on-field exploits on Friday, which are pretty flashy in their own right.

Jordan, who broke the school's all-time records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in the Bison's previous game against Gilmer County, torched Richwood as well to the tune of 249 yards and three touchdowns on just 6 of 9 passing.

Those statistics added to Jordan's career marks, which now stand at 5,234 passing yards and 55 touchdowns.

"It felt great," Jordan said of his record-breaking night against Gilmer. "Beating the best players that's ever been through here, but obviously I couldn't do it without my line. Also my wideouts - I just throw little passes and they run the rest. I couldn't ask for much more."

Big yards on few completions have become his calling card this season. He has now thrown for 883 yards on just 32-of-61 passing, good for 27.6 yards per completion.

That kind of efficiency has helped Class A No. 13 Buffalo get off to a 4-1 start with its only blemish coming at Class AA Poca.

"I've been very fortunate to have good quarterbacks since I've been here except for one year," Buffalo coach Mike Sawyer said. "I had [previous school record holder] Nick Harris with the records he broke, he was an awesome quarterback and Levi is just as good or better. He does a lot of things out there and doesn't care whether he does anything, as long as we win that's all he cares about.

"He's a better person than he is a player and that's saying something because he's a heck of a player."

Statistics aside, Jordan has guided the Bison to quick starts before over the past couple of years, including last season when Buffalo started 5-0.

But as the competition strengthened, the Bison faded, losing three of the final five games, falling out of the top eight and into a first-round road playoff game 225 miles away at East Hardy.

The finale was a 48-15 loss at the hands of the Cougars, the Bison's second first-round exit in as many years.

Needless to say, Jordan feels he has some unfinished business to attend to.

"[Hosting a playoff game] would be huge," Jordan said. "And if we just keep going and preparing for the next game, we can do it."

Once again, the Bison's schedule will get much tougher in the second half with a home game against No. 10 Wirt County (4-1) this week and away games at Symmes Valley, Ohio (5-1), and then at No. 4 Wahama (6-0) to finish the season.

But if Jordan and Sawyer were looking for any positive reinforcement, Rogers didn't hesitate to throw in his opinion of the Bison - and in particular, Jordan.

"They're a good football team and Levi in my opinion - and I've seen a lot of them - is the best quarterback in the state," Rogers said. "They've got a lot of speed, a guy that can get them the ball, and they're a good football team."
