Soccer roundup: Winfield boys top Capital 5-1; GW edges Cabell Midland

Capital took a 1-0 lead before Winfield scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Cougars 5-1 in boys soccer Thursday.

Steven Taylor scored twice for the Generals (13-4-2) while Tyler Duty, Hunter Sheldon and Connor Grant each added goals, with Preston Sheldon accounting for three assists.

Keenan Barbazette scored for Capital (5-8-4).

 

  • GW 4, MIDLAND 3: Caleb Barnette opened the scoring and had the tie-breaking goal at the end as visiting George Washington rallied to win. Garrett Warner and Noah Miller also scored for the Patriots (13-5-2). Noah Wilds had two goals for Cabell Midland (7-10-1) and Jordan Maynard one.

  • NITRO 2, ST. JOSEPH 1: Alec Bailey and Evan Eich scored as Class AAA No. 15 Nitro downed visiting St. Joseph. Lakin Brooks netted the lone goal for Class AA-A No. 10 St. Joseph (9-10-1). Lee Klock made eight saves for Nitro (12-8) while Torin Walters stopped six shots for the Irish.

  • TEAYS VALLEY 3, SA 2: Yilmar netted a pair of goals as Teays Valley Christian downed St. Albans. Eli Gillespie also tallied a goal for Teays Valley, while Jack Wiles and Nathan McNeil scored for the Red Dragons (4-11-2).

  • WINFIELD 4, CATHOLIC 1: Emily Cole tallied a pair of goals as Class AAA No. 3 Winfield defeated Class AA-A No. 4 Charleston Catholic at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium. Jayne Lawman and Jordan Pauley added goals for the Generals (14-1-2) while Caroline Dundervill scored for the Fighting Irish (12-5-2).
