More soccer sectionals tonight
Catholic and Hurricane boys, Sissonville girls finish regular season at No. 1

High school soccer sectional tournaments get into full swing today around the Kanawha Valley.

Winfield faces Point Pleasant at 6 p.m. at Hurricane High School in Class AAA boys Region 4 Section 1, followed by the Nitro-St. Albans winner from Monday playing Hurricane at 8 p.m.

Sissonville takes on St. Joseph at 5:30 p.m. at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium in Coonskin Park in AA-A Region 4 Section 2 while Charleston Catholic, the three-time defending state champion, squares off at 7:30 with the Herbert Hoover-Scott winner from Monday's game.

In girls play, Hurricane takes on Nitro at 6 p.m. at Winfield High in AAA Region 4 Section 1, followed by Winfield facing the St. Albans-Point Pleasant winner from Monday.

  • Charleston Catholic and Hurricane boys teams and the Sissonville girls squad finished the regular season No. 1 in the state coaches association final rankings released Monday.
  • The Redskins (18-0-1), the Fighting Irish (18-0-2) and the Morgantown girls (19-0-1) were the only schools to complete the season without a loss.

    Hurricane is No. 1 in Class AAA, followed by Parkersburg, Huntington, Winfield and George Washington. In AA-A Catholic is the top-ranked school followed by Williamstown, East Fairmont, Weir and Sissonville.

    On the girls side, Sissonville was No. 1 in AA-A followed by Bridgeport, Grafton, Charleston Catholic and Herbert Hoover. In AAA, Morgantown, Buckhannon-Upshur, Winfield, Princeton and Hurricane are the top five. (See Page 2B for complete rankings.)
