High school football roundup: Ripley upsets South Charleston 7-6

South Charleston freshman quarterback Kentre Grier scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to rally the Black Eagles within a point, but host Ripley blocked the extra-point kick to preserve a 7-6 victory in high school football Friday night.

The loss, which ended a four-game win streak, could prove crucial to the Black Eagles' Class AAA playoff hopes. Now at 5-4, they started the night tied with Wheeling Park at No. 16 in the SSAC ratings. The Vikings (4-5) were No. 23 in AAA.

Grier threw for 247 yards on 20-of-37 passing with an interception. He also led South Charleston's ground game with 28 yards on nine carries and a score.

Kevin Forrest caught seven passes for 147 yards, including a 47-yarder that was the longest of the night for either team.

Ripley's Jake Martin completed 9 of 15 passes for 42 yards with an interception and was the Vikings' top runner with 75 yards on 20 attempts. On defense for Ripley, Justin Hinzman made eight tackles and had an interception.

  • ROANE 40, HOOVER 14: In a game that had 10 lost fumbles, including six by the visiting Huskies, Roane County kept its Class AA playoff hopes alive with a convincing victory.
  • John Ash ran for three 2-yard touchdowns and finished with 115 yards on 16 carries for the Raiders (5-3). Hunter Bradley added 74 yards on 13 carries, and Luke Scott had 41 on 14 as Roane amassed 261 yards on the ground.

    Tyler King caught three passes for 56 yards, including TD grabs of 38 and 5 yards.

    For the Huskies, who trailed 21-0 in the first quarter, Tyler Americo and Shaun Dotson ran for touchdowns. Americo led Hoover's ground attack with 67 yards on 18 attempts, and Dotson added 58 yards on 15 attempts.

    The Huskies were plagued by turnovers, fumbling the ball seven times (losing six) and throwing an interception. Roane County had its own security issues, putting the ball on the turf five times, losing four.

  • POINT PLEASANT 48, SHADY SPRING 7: Teran Barnitz rushed for two touchdowns and returned interceptions for two more as Point Pleasant defeated visiting Shady Spring.
  • Barnitz, who rushed six times for 87 yards, scored on runs of 1 and 55 yards and returned interceptions 25 and 72 yards as Point Pleasant, ranked No. 12 in Class AAA, improved to 6-2.

    Point quarterback Aden Yates completed 6 of 7 passes for 121 yards, including TD throws to Tylun Campbell for 66 yards and Brycen Raymond for 18.

    Point's Marquez Griffin scored on a 64-yard run and led the team in rushing with 123 yards on six carries.

    Jordan Palchesko scored for Shady Spring (4-4) and totaled 63 yards on 15 carries.

  • BUFFALO 40, FAYETTEVILLE 13: Laythen Good rushed 16 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns as Buffalo improved to 7-1 with a victory over visiting Fayetteville.
  • The Bison's Levi Jordan completed 8 of 13 passes for 124 yards, including touchdown throws to Gabe Garrison for 35 yards, Garison Erwin for 39 and Jordan Tucker for 11.
