CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Three teams that were in the state volleyball tournament as regional runners-up advanced past the quarterfinal round on the tournament's first day.

In Class A, Region 1 runner-up Magnolia defeated Region 3 champion Sherman. In Class AA, Region 1 runner-up Ritchie County beat Region 3 champion Pikeview and Philip Barbour, runner-up in Region 2, beat Region 4 champion Herbert Hoover.

Other than that it was all chalk in the quarterfinals with all four regional champions advancing to the semifinal round in Class AAA.

  • While there are no oceans in the vicinity of the Charleston Civic Center, the Tide came in Friday.

Sherman students and fans filled section 141 and most of 143 to watch the Tide's Class A quarterfinal match against Magnolia.

The Tide fans were easily the loudest of the tournament's first day, but the Magnolia fans, who were also here in large numbers and loud, got the last laugh when their Blue Eagles defeated Sherman 25-23, 25-14, 25-17.

  • Oak Glen stands alone as the only team with a chance to repeat as state champions. Last year's Class A champion, Wirt County, did not qualify for the tournament and the defending Class AAA champion, Spring Valley, lost to George Washington in Friday's semifinal round.
