High school football playoff roundup: No. 4 Robert C. Byrd knocks off Bluefield

Mason Compton returned the game's opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, sparking No. 4 Robert C. Byrd to a 34-20 victory over No. 5 Bluefield in a Class AA quarterfinal game Friday night at RCB.

Robert C. Byrd (11-1) used its size to control the line of scrimmage for the school's first-ever win in the state football quarterfinals.

Compton added a 60-yard touchdown reception and intercepted two passes, and teammate Tre Cox rushed for two touchdowns. Iziah Hill caught a 16-yard TD pass, his 12th receiving score of the season.

RCB limited Bluefield's ground attack to 167 yards. Montel Leggett led the Beavers (9-3) with 85 yards.

  • MADONNA 29, ST. MARYS 14: Ross Comis threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 59 yards and two scores and intercepted a pass on the goal line as No. 4 Madonna defeated No. 5 St. Marys in a Class A quarterfinal game in Weirton.
  • The Blue Dons (11-1) will face the winner of today's Tucker County-Clay-Battelle matchup in next week's semifinals.

    Madonna's Elliot Nero caught two of the touchdowns, including a 60-yarder on third-and-18 late in the game to seal a victory. David Gray paced the Blue Devils (10-2) with 136 rushing yards. Derek Barnhart and Andrew Cosper scored the St. Marys touchdowns.

  • MARTINSBURG 50, MUSSELMAN 7: Quarterback Justin "Cookie'' Clinton ran for 254 yards and four touchdowns as two-time defending Class AAA champion Martinsburg earned a repeat victory over its Eastern Panhandle neighbor.
  • The No. 2 Bulldogs (11-1) advance to next weekend's semifinals against No. 3 George Washington. The game will be played in Martinsburg at a time and date to be determined on Sunday.

    Martinsburg got a big break right off the bat when the Applemen opened the game with an onside kick and Tyshawn Smith returned it 54 yards for a Bulldogs' TD and an 8-0 advantage.

    Musselman's Maverick Keller had 83 yards on 14 carries, and Caleb Dembeck was 8 of 17 passing for 78 yards, including a TD to Trevon Wesco.

    Martinsburg beat Musselman 73-0 during the regular season. The Applemen ousted Capital in the first round of the playoffs last week.

  • BRIDGEPORT 28, Frankfort 0: Brett Hathaway rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns as Class AA No. 3 Indians shut out No. 6 Frankfort.
  • Bridgeport (9-2) limited the Falcons to just 161 yards of total offense. The Indians, who rushed for 306 yards, also received an 8-yard TD run from Anthony Caldera and a 24-yard interception return for a score by Tyler Marks.
