Local wrestlers compete today in tournaments at Fairmont, Braxton

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- It is a busy weekend for local high school wrestling teams with two big tournaments welcoming teams from the Kanawha Valley.

George Washington, Nitro and Riverside will compete as part of a 24-team field in Fairmont for the Winner's Choice tournament, which is schedule to start at 4 p.m. today at the Fairmont Armory. Other teams scheduled to compete are Bridgeport, Buckhannon-Upshur, Cabell Midland, Clay-Battelle, East Fairmont, Hedgesville, Fairmont Senior, Keyser, Madonna, Morgantown, Musselman, Nicholas County, North Marion, Point Pleasant, Preston, Ripley, Ritchie County, Roane County, Robert C. Byrd, Washington and Williamstown.

GW features six wrestlers ranked in Class AAA in the West Virginia Coaches Association/wvmat.com weekly poll - Sam Moore (No. 5 at 106 pounds), David Pancake (No. 8 at 120), Jensen Lorea (No. 3 at 126), Jake Smith (No. 2 at 160), Hunter Jones (No. 8 at 170) and Jack Skidmore (No. 7 at 285).

Nitro and Riverside each have one ranked wrestler. The Wildcats' David Smith is No. 6 at 285 and the Warriors' Chase Hanshaw is No. 10 at 195.

Herbert Hoover, St. Albans and Sissonville will take part in the Braxton County Invitational at the Braxton County Armory against teams from Braxton County, Calhoun County, Clay County, Fayetteville, Grafton, Greenbrier West, Liberty (Harrison), Liberty (Raleigh), Petersburg, Philip Barbour, Richwood, Webster County and Wirt County. The meet begins at 5 p.m. today.

Hoover has four wrestlers ranked in Class AA-A this week - Cameren Duncan (No. 8 at 113), Justin Duncan (No. 6 at 120), Zane Weese (No. 3 at 220) and Richard Woods (No. 5 at 285). Two Sissonville wrestlers - Tanner Moore (No. 9 at 106) and Nick Lanes (No. 7 at 145) - are ranked, while the Red Dragons did not have anyone ranked this week.
