Girls roundup: GW's early lead holds up in win over Hurricane

George Washington jumped out to a 37-20 halftime lead en route to 75-51 girls basketball road win at Hurricane Tuesday.

Rachel Ward recorded 21 points, Kelli Jo Harrison contributed 18 and Kayla Stewart had 11 for the Class AAA No. 8 Patriots (8-4).

The Redskins (5-6) were paced by Abby Watson with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

  • NITRO 46, WOODROW 44: Woodrow Wilson cut the Nitro lead to two points with three seconds to play but could not get the ball back as the Wildcats ran out the clock to secure the win.
  • For Nitro (7-5), Savannah Shamblin scored 22 points while Kelli Douglas finished with 11 points.

    Bre Thompson was the leading scorer for Woodrow Wilson (3-8) with 13 points.

  • MIDLAND 47, CAPITAL 29: Emily Pitkin had 17 points and Sierra Jordan 14 to lead host Cabell Midland to victory.
  • For the Cougars, Keke Walker tallied nine points.

  • HUNTINGTON 71, RIVERSIDE 36: Kiana Evans scored her 1,000th career point in the first quarter as Class AAA No. 6 Huntington won at home.
  • Evans finished the day with 26 points for the Highlanders (10-3) while Dazha Congleton added 15. For the Warriors (2-11), Brittany Wood scored 13.

  • SCOTT 49, SISSONVILLE 43: Scott used a 15-4 second-quarter run to upend Class AA No. 7 Sissonville.
  • For the Skyhawks (7-5), Jaimee Dotson led all scorers with 15 points and Ali Whitman contributed 14.
