Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will replace Robert Griffin III as the guest speaker at the Big Atlantic Classic tipoff luncheon Sunday in Beckley, according to a report in the Register-Herald.

Doctors decided the Washington Redskins' quarterback should not attend due to his recent knee surgery and possible complications that could arise during travel to the speaking engagement.

Newton won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship at Auburn in 2010. In two NFL seasons, he has thrown for 7,920 yards and 40 touchdowns in addition to rushing for nearly 1,500 yards.

The luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. with Newton's portion of the program scheduled for 1:30 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
