Catholic without coach for weekend games

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston Catholic, the top-ranked boys Class A basketball team in the state, will be without veteran coach Bill McClanahan for its weekend trip to the Eastern Panhandle.

McClanahan, an IT manager, must miss the games because of his job. The Irish play at No. 3 Tucker County tonight and at Moorefield Saturday afternoon.

Handling duties on the bench will be assistant coaches Fred McPherson and Matt Morrison.

"We are going to miss him deeply,'' said senior forward Zach Casto. "He is the main mastermind behind our whole team. He gives us confidence to play. We are really going to miss him.''

McClanahan also expects to be absent for the Feb. 13 showdown against No. 2 Tug Valley at the Charleston Civic Center.

Catholic was originally scheduled to be off this weekend, but when its Eastern Panhandle trip was snowed out in December, this coming weekend was the only one available for rescheduling.
