CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Capital senior Michelle Newhouse was named the Gatorade West Virginia girls soccer player of the year Thursday.

The senior goalkeeper recorded eight shutouts with a .769 save percentage this past season, leading the Cougars (10-11-1) to the sectional final. Newhouse, who has signed to play at West Virginia University, was a 2012 All-America selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association, the West Virginia Coaches Association Class AAA player of the year and is a three-time first-team all-state selection.

Newhouse has maintained a 3.85 grade-point average and volunteered at an animal shelter and as a youth basketball coach for the Salvation Army. She is now a finalist for the Gatorade national award, which will be announced in May.
