Girls roundup: Whelan, Fletcher lead Charleston Catholic to win

Anna Whelan scored 18 points and Samantha Fletcher had 17 points and nine rebounds Friday night as host Charleston Catholic earned a 49-39 girls basketball win against Valley.

Catholic pressured its way to a 29-11 halftime lead. Peyton Mullen's eight steals led the defensive effort as Catholic (8-11) won handily despite 24 points by the Greyhounds' Alexis Payne.

Valley, ranked ninth in Class A, fell to 9-5.

  • MIDLAND 45, ST. ALBANS 29: Sierra Jordan finished with 18 points and Emily Pitkin 11 to help Cabell Midland to a road win.
  • The Knights (13-5) held the Red Dragons to nine points in the second half. Torri Wilson led St. Albans (9-10) with 11 points.

  • PRINCETON 60, CAPITAL 48: Mckenzie Akers poured in 28 points as Class AAA No. 5 Princeton downed visiting Capital.
  • Khadija Payne added 10 points for the Tigers (15-2). India Harrison paced the Cougars (8-9) with 14 points.

  • HUNTINGTON 86, HURRICANE 39: Kiana Evans scored 26 points for AAA No. 4 Huntington (17-4) and Dazha Congleton added 21, Ericka Budd 16 and Alexis Williams 12.
  • Abby Watson turned in 25 points and 13 rebounds for Hurricane (5-14).

  • SC 59, WINFIELD 43: Lina Villanueva netted 21 points for visiting South Charleston.
  • Alliyah Webb chipped in 12 points for the Black Eagles (10-11) and Taliah Cashwell had 11. Haeley Moore tallied 17 points for the Generals (10-10).

  • SPRING VALLEY 76, NITRO 48: The visiting Timberwolves outscored the Wildcats 26-13 in the first quarter and never looked back.
  • Madison Morris notched 19 points for AAA No. 2 Spring Valley (18-3) and Sarah Kelly 14. Savannah Shamblin scored 24 points for Nitro (9-11).

  • BUFFALO 56, MIDLAND TRAIL 43: Chelsey Parkins scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Buffalo (11-4) won at Midland Trail.
  • For the Patriots (4-11), Madison Syner had a team-high 20 points.

  • TOLSIA 61, HOOVER 44: Jordan Presley had 20 points, eight assists and 12 steals and Savannah Winnett had 15 points and 12 rebounds as Tolsia (16-3) won at Herbert Hoover.
  • For the Huskies (10-9), Caroline Thornburg finished with 13 points.

  • SUMMERS 59, PIKEVIEW 55: Summers County overcame a sluggish third quarter to secure the win.
  • Avery Pivont netted 23 points for the AA No. 6 Bobcats (13-5) and Tyra Wynes contributed 10 points, eight assists and four steals. Hope Nester scored 21 points for the Panthers (8-10).

  • CHAPMANVILLE 60, TUG VALLEY 35: Kristen Desrocher tallied 12 points for the Tigers (10-9) and Kaitlyn Hall donated 10.
  • Adreana Vance had eight points for the Class A Panthers (9-8).
