Ripley goes for 7th straight region wrestling title

Huntington's Logan Grass (106), Jordan Allen (113), Billy Waldeck (138) and Justin Arthur (145) are No. 1 in their respective weight classes along with Point Pleasant's Guy Fisher (120). Waldeck won a state title at 132 last year and Arthur at 138.

The Highlanders are fairly deep with Jonathan Spence (No. 4, 120), Chase Childers (No. 5, 126), Cody Shepherd (No. 9, 132), Paden Christian (No. 4, 152), Carter Cape hart (No. 8, 182), Nigall Cabell (No. 5, 220) and Toney Kitts (No. 5, 285) also ranked indiviaully.

Point also features a strong lineup in John Raike (No. 3, 113), Micah Powell (No. 8, 126), Noah Searls (No. 3, 138), Josh Hudson (No. 4, 145), Trevor Hill (No. 3, 170) and Brycen Reymond (No. 4, 182). Searls was a state titlist at 132 last year.

Other state-ranked grapplers from the Valley include Hurricane's Jeremy Francis (No. 7, 152) and Mitchell Fitzgerald (No. 6, 285) and Nitro's Hunter Skeens (No. 6, 220) and David Smith (No. 8, 285).

  • Clay County is eying its first title in AA-A Region 4.

    The No. 5 Panthers will have some stiff competition from No. 3 Wirt County along with Buffalo, Calhoun County, Herbert Hoover, Parkersburg Catholic, Poca, Ravenswood, Roane County, Sissonville, St. Joseph, Wahama and Williamstown. Matches begin a 10:30 a.m. at Roane County High School.

    Clay has finished runner-up last year and 2011 and third in 2010 with Point Pleasant winning the championship each year. Now the door has been cracked open a bit with Point moving up to AAA. The Panthers, though, finished behind champion Wirt in the Little Kanawha Conference tournament Feb. 2. 

    Clay, which took third at last year's state meet, features Jack Cummings (No. 5, 106), Justin Triplett (No. 2, 113), Zach Ahart (No. 6, 120), Alex Suite (No. 2, 132), Michell Schoolcraft (No. 8, 138), Ricky Ahart (No. 8, 152), William Tyler Stewart (No. 3, 160), Brandon White (No. 8, 170). Triplett was a state titlist at 106 and Suite at 126. Wirt's Jon Cain (120) and Jake Linville (138) are No. 1 in their weight classes.

    Hoover features top-ranked Richard Woods (285) and Camren Duncan (No. 7, 113), Justin Duncan (No. 5, 120) and Zane Weese (No. 3, 220). Other Valley wrestlers seeking state berths are Sissonville's Tanner Moore (No. 10, 106), Nick Lane (No. 10, 145) and Buffalo's Kyle Frazier (No. 3, 195) and Ryan White (No. 7, 220).
