SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.VA. -- Spring Valley just needed a few adjustments Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Madison Morrison scored 16 points as the Timberwolves downed Parkersburg 80-51 in the consolation game of the Mountain State Athletic Conference Night of Champions at the South Charleston Community Center.

Spring Valley, No. 2 in this week's Class AAA Associated Press poll, jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the opening quarter but then allowed the Big Reds to close within 24-20 early in the second quarter.

"We were struggling in the first half a little bit and letting them hang around,'' said Spring Valley coach Bo Miller. "I don't know whether it was shooting in here or what. We corrected a few things and got going. I think we figured out how to break their press. We were running our press-breaker wrong and they were getting stops out of it.''

The Timberwolves ended the first half with a 48-27 lead and never looked back after that.

Sophomore guard Sarah Kelly and sophomore forward Brooke Heck added 10 points apiece for Spring Valley (19-3), which had 12 of its 16 players score at least one point.

"I hope it carries over to Wednesday,'' said Miller in reference to next week's sectional tournament that features surging Cabell Midland and No. 3 Huntington. "It's a tough matchup for us. We've got a tough section.''

Senior post player Kennedy Walker tallied 11 points for the Big Reds (13-9) while senior forward Imani Ward and freshman shooting guard Haley Ackerman donated 10 points apiece. Ward, the team's top scorer, rolled her ankle and was limited.

"Everything [Spring Valley] did we knew they were going to do,'' said Parkersburg coach Kenny DeMoss, whose team was just 15 of 40 from the free-throw line. "We make some of our free throws in the first half, it's a better game.

"We just didn't get back well on transition defense on missed shots. We just can't allow that many points and be successful in the postseason. No way.''
