The fifth-seeded Polar Bears forced 32 turnovers in a 72-56 victory over No. 4 Clay County in the Class AA girls state tournament quarterfinals at the Charleston Civic Center.
Fairmont Senior squares off with defending state champion and No. 1 Westside in the semifinals at 7:15 tonight. The two teams didn't meet during the regular season.
Clay advanced to last year's state semifinals before falling to Westside.
Kaden Whalen scored 22 points for Fairmont Senior while Emily Stoller added 15 points and nine rebounds and Jasmine Johnson had 14 points. The Polar Bears shot 56.5 percent in the second half and 52 for the game.
Brittany Gould notched 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Clay and was the only player in double figures for the Panthers. In addition to the turnovers, the Panthers shot 30.2 percent.
It wasn't pretty as Fairmont Senior and Clay combined for 40 first-half turnovers.
Clay had trouble finding its range, shooting 28.1 percent in the opening half and never recovered. The Panthers played right with the Polar Bears in the first quarter, trailing just 19-18. Fairmont Senior started pulling ahead in the second quarter with a 9-2 run to grab a 28-20 lead with 2:51 to go before halftime. The Polar Bears extended it to 34-24 at the break.
