Late free throws seal Robert C. Byrd's win over Tolsia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Robert C. Byrd made it three out of four Thursday night.

The fourth-seeded Eagles converted 3 of 4 free throws in the final 22.9 seconds to seal a 51-44 win over No. 5 Tolsia in the Class AA quarterfinals at the Civic Center.

RCB (20-6) will take on No. 1 Bluefield at 7:15 p.m. today in the semifinals. The Eagles along with Big 10 Conference mates Bridgeport, North Marion and Fairmont Senior competed in Thursday quarterfinals with three moving on. Joining RCB in the semis are Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior.

RCB was cruising along with a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter until Tolsia cut it to four points (48-44) on Terry Davis' pair of foul shots with 23.5 seconds left. The Eagles missed four straight from the charity stripe before Luke Dyer hit two with 22.9 ticks to go and Nick Dyer made 1 of 2 with 8.6 remaining to seal the deal.

Devonti Birch tallied 13 points for RCB while Nick Dyer added 12 and Luke Dyer donated 10.

Davis finished with 20 points for Tolsia (17-9), which had one of its lowest offensive outputs this season. Rebels leading scorer Morgan Stacy, who was averaging 15.0 points, was held to six points on 1-of-10 shooting.
