Myranda Murphy scored on an error with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to send host Ripley past Riverside 3-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Class AAA Region 3 Section 4 softball tournament.
Ripley (16-6), which finished No. 10 in the final state sportswriters' poll, will visit South Charleston on Thursday in the Region 3 semifinals. The Vikings beat Riverside 4-0 Thursday but lost 12-8 Friday to force a third and deciding game.
Murphy reached first base after an error on her fly ball to center field in the eighth. Ripley's Kelsey Moore sent a ground ball to third that was scooped up, but the throw sailed wide of first and into right field, allowing Murphy to plate the winning run.
Riverside knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the sixth as Chelsea Diegert led off with a single, took second on Cassady Schmidt's hit and scored on Destinae Schmidt's one-out single.
The Warriors (20-16) left 11 runners stranded and pounded out 10 hits, but committed five errors that led to three unearned runs. Riverside starter Sara Winter surrendered just four singles and struck out four while rapping out two hits. Destini Diegert went 3 for 4 for the Warriors while Felicia Burton and Kaylea Wolfe each drove in a run.
The Fighting Irish led 6-3 entering the sixth before the Patriots scored six runs, highlighted by Anderson's grand slam, to take the lead for good at 9-6. Tanner Sorrells went 2 for 3 with a double for GW (20-10) while Ty McClanahan pounded out two hits and Connor Moffatt doubled.
