Chelsey Hager struck out 22 and Ripley plated three runs in the top of the 11th innings Thursday to secure a 4-1 victory at South Charleston in the Class AAA Region 3 softball semifinals.
Ripley (17-7), the No. 10 team in the final state sportswriters' poll, hosts the Greenbrier East-Shady Spring winner next Thursday in the Region 3 final with a state tournament berth on the line. SC had beaten the Vikings twice this season.
Kelsey Moore's run-scoring single on a squeeze bunt with one out in the top of the 11th gave the Vikings the lead for good at 2-1 and Ashley Mellinger added a two-run double. Dusti Fisher's RBI single with one out in the top of the seventh knotted the game at 1-all to force extra innings. Hager went 2 for 4 with a double.
Alli Burdette whiffed 16 for the Black Eagles (20-10) and Amanda McDonald lashed out two hits and drove in a run.
Mariah Caudill, Alyssa Bonham and Haili McCown each drove in a run in the sixth to give SA a 3-0 lead and Ali Haynes belted a three-run homer in the seventh to set the final margin. Haynes, who set down the first nine, fired a five-hit shutout with two strikeouts. Karissa Cochran and Sarah Hussell doubled for Point.
The Red Dragons (28-4) will play at Hurricane next Thursday in the Region 4 final with the winner moving on to the state tournament.
