CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham was named the Gatorade West Virginia boys track and field athlete of the year for the third consecutive year Thursday.
Burcham, also a three-time Gatorade boys cross country runner of the year, won two individual state titles in last month's Class AAA state track meet in helping the Knights to a second-place finish.
Burcham captured the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds and the 3,200 in a clocking of 9:08.34, winning both events for a third straight year. He was also third in the 800 (1:55.46) and ran the anchor leg for the winning 4x800 relay.
Burcham, who has signed with Oklahoma, has maintained a weighted 4.07 grade-point average and has volunteered locally doing routine maintenance and errands for the elderly and as a youth track coach and mentor. He is now a finalist for the Gatorade national honor, which will be announced later this month.
