Joey Trupo scored two goals as visiting Charleston Catholic defeated Bridgeport 3-1 Saturday to extend its unbeaten streak to 56 matches in both teams' season opener in boys high school soccer.
Fernando Porras tallied off an assist from Joey Reese as the Indians tied the game at 1-all just before halftime. Roger Burdette gave the Fighting Irish the lead for good off a cross from Trupo less than nine minutes into the second half.
Catholic's last loss was a 7-4 setback at Parkersburg on Oct. 12, 2010. After that, the Irish won the last five games of the 2010 season, including their second of four straight Class AA-A state titles. Catholic has had four ties and finished with identical 23-0-2 records the past two seasons.
Patrick Kline and Andrew McCarty turned in one save apiece for Catholic. Noah Rhine made five stops for Bridgeport, which lost to the Irish 2-1 in last year's Class AA-A state tournament semifinals.
SC 2, GREENBRIER EAST 1 Jared Butler scored twice, including the equalizer midway through the second period for visiting South Charleston in its opener. Jacob Gordon made three saves for the Black Eagles. Grant Riddle notched a goal for Greenbrier East 40 seconds before halftime to knot the game at 1-all.
HURRICANE 5 TEAYS VALLEY 0: Loran Meadows tallied three goals for the host Redskins, the AAA defending state champion. Hurricane also received two goals from Guillermo Ugarte and Timmy Hayslett had two saves to preserve the shutout.
SISSONVILLE 1 EAST FAIRMONT 1: J.R. Strickland stopped 11 shots as the Indians played the visiting Bees to a draw. Josh Rawson scored for Sissonville while Levi Perkins had a goal for East Fairmont. Brett Metheny accounted for 12 saves for the Bees.
RIPLEY 5, POINT PLEASANT 1: JoJo Greeley-Fay scored three goals and Remy Boyce added two in Ripley's first game.
WINFIELD 1, WHEELING PARK 0: Freshman Mary Lawman scored on a first-half penalty kick as Winfield edged Wheeling Park at Wheeling Island Stadium. Devyn Nickerson made seven saves for the Patriots (0-1), who didn't attempt a shot on goal. The Generals, the defending AAA state titlist, improved to 2-0.
CAPITAL 8, SHADY SPRING 5: Ally Reeves notched three goals as the host Cougars downed the Tigers in both teams' season opener. Amy Glasow and Elena Pomponio chipped in a pair of scores apiece for the Cougars while Caroline Bohach had one goal. For Shady Spring, Lyndsey Thompson had three goals while Hannah Thompson and Lauren Solock netted one each.
CATHOLIC 10, TRINITY 0: Peyton Keener scored three goals for Charleston Catholic (2-0) while Sophia Bumgarner chipped in two. Payton Mullen, Caroline Dundervill, Sarah Joseck, Grace Umstot and Vida Imani had one goal apiece.
SISSONVILLE 7, EAST FAIRMONT 0: Karli Pinkerton scored five goals for the Indians at Trace Fork. Mary Schmeck and Madison Jones added one each for Sissonville (2-0) while Brooke Reed had one save for the shutout.
