CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Runners from across the region will hit the starting line today with their sights set on reaching the state cross country championships.
Regional races involving Kanawha Valley teams are scheduled for Cabell Midland (Class AAA Region 4) and Ripley (Class AAA Region 3, Class AA-A Region 4).
The boys race at Cabell Midland is set to begin at 5 p.m., with the girls following at 5:45. Teams competing there include the host Knights, Huntington, Hurricane, Lincoln County, Logan, Nitro, Point Pleasant, Spring Valley, St. Albans and Winfield.
On the boys side, Midland is the highest-ranked team in attendance according to RunWV.com at No. 2, followed by No. 3 Hurricane and No. 7 Winfield. Hurricane's girls enter the meet second in the power rankings, followed by Winfield (No. 3) and Cabell Midland (No. 10).
In the AAA regional at Ripley, Capital, George Washington, Riverside and South Charleston join the host Vikings and Greenbrier East, Oak Hill, Princeton, Shady Spring and Woodrow Wilson in the field. None of the teams entered are inside the RunWV.com top 10, but several quality runners figure to be on display, including George Washington's Matthew Brafford, Greenbrier East's Levi Snedegar and Oak Hill's Cody Gillespie on the boys side and Capital's Peyton Panger and Woodrow Wilson's Emily Fedders on the girls side.
In Class AA-A, Buffalo, Charleston Catholic, Herbert Hoover, Poca, Scott and Sissonville will be among 15 schools lined up to race in the Region 4 race at Ripley.
Charleston Catholic's girls squad is the only ranked team (No. 2) in attendance. Top individuals expected to hit the course include Buffalo's Hayden Harrison, Charleston Catholic's Caden McClanahan and Hoover's Josh McClung for the boys and Catholic's Payton Mullen and Hannah Gacek, Ravenswood's Hailey Miller and Taylor Treadway, Wayne's Kylie Rutherford and Scott's Sheena Chambers among the girls.
The top 10 individuals at each regional advance to the state meet, along with a set number of teams as determined by the total number of complete teams entered. The state cross country meet will be Nov. 2 at Cabell Midland.
