CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The 32nd annual state high school volleyball tournament will be hitting Charleston this weekend.
Twenty-four teams from around the state will vie for championships in Class AAA, AA and A beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Civic Center. The AAA title match is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday followed by Class A and Class AA. (See Page 2B for pairings and schedule.)
The Kanawha Valley will have three participants in Capital (AAA), Charleston Catholic (A) and Herbert Hoover (AA).
The schools competing in AAA are Cabell Midland, Capital, Parkersburg, Musselman, Spring Valley, Parkersburg South, Greenbrier East and Martinsburg.
In AA, Oak Glen, Clay County, Philip Barbour, Independence, Hoover, Ritchie County, Westside and Robert C. Byrd are competing.
Charleston Catholic, Tyler Consolidated, East Hardy, Man, Wirt County, Magnolia, Greater Beckley Christian and Pendleton County are facing off in Class A.
Capital opens with Musselman, the state runner-up in AAA the past two years, while Hoover squares off with Ritchie County, which has also been the second-place finisher in AA the past two seasons. Catholic plays Tyler Consolidated.
Defending champions in Class AAA and Class A failed to advance.
George Washington, last year's AAA defending state champion, was knocked out in sectional play by Capital. Williamstown, which won the Class A title last year, didn't make it back. The only returning state champion in back-to-back winner Oak Glen in AA.
Magnolia's Pam Chapman will be honored as coach of the year while Sandy Mitchell will be recognized as official of the year.
