D.J. Stewart rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns and the Bluefield Beavers held off Nicholas County 26-14 at rainy Mitchell Stadium in a Class AA quarterfinal Friday night.
Bluefield will play the winner of today's Bridgeport-Fairmont Senior game next weekend in the semifinals. Date and time will be announced Sunday.
Bluefield's Jordan Masterson blocked an Austin Hill punt on the fourth play of the game, and Brandon Lilly pounced on it at the Grizzlies' 27. Three plays later, Stewart scored on a 6-yard run with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
Stewart scored on a 4-yard run with 9:32 left in the first half for a 13-0 lead. Then, with time running out in the half, Nicholas' Tyler Sagraves found Josh Gregory in the end zone for an 8-yard scoring strike with 33 seconds left.
On the first play after the kickoff, Stewart broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run for a 20-7 Bluefield halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Grizzlies' Wil Mayes scored on a 10-yard run to cut the Bluefield lead to 20-14, but the Beavers sealed the victory with two Francisco Desiderio field goals.
| RCB 36, RITCHIE 6: Juwan Jones-Wright rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns as Class AA No. 13 Robert C. Byrd picked up a quarterfinal win at No. 12 Ritchie County.
The Eagles will play at No. 1 Wayne in a semifinal next weekend. Date and time will be determined Sunday. Byrd outgained the Rebels 341-147 and forced three turnovers while committing none.
Elias Grant got Byrd (9-3) on the board first with a 1-yard score followed by Jones-Wright's first of two 5-yard touchdown runs.
Austin Garrett scored the lone touchdown for Ritchie (8-4) on a 13-yard run to pull the Rebels within 14-6, but Jones-Wright's second TD run gave the Eagles a 16-point halftime cushion.
Byrd quarterback Julian Marino connected on a 27-yard TD strike to Justin Noble in the third quarter. Gerrod Bee added a 2-yard rushing TD to complete the Eagles' scoring.
Alex Lipscomb led the Rebels with 43 yards rushing on 12 carries but threw two interceptions.
