CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Another appearance by national prep power Oak Hill Academy (Va.) and the presence of 12 state-ranked boys and girls basketball teams highlight the schedule for the Big Atlantic Classic, set for Jan. 27-Feb. 1 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
Oak Hill (21-1), ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Super 25 national ratings, takes on Arlington Country Day, Va. (12-3) in a national game at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The six-day hoopsfest also features eight West Virginia-ranked boys teams and four ranked girls teams, with competition in six different four-team pods (see schedule, Page 2B). Each team is guaranteed two games, a first-rounder and either a consolation or a championship.
The ranked Class AAA boys teams include No. 3 Capital, No. 5 Greenbrier East, No. 6 Parkersburg South and No. 9 Woodrow Wilson. In boys AA, it's No. 2 Wyoming East, No. 3 Bluefield and No. 4 Westside, while the single-A field features No. 2 Greater Beckley Christian.
Capital squares off with Lewis County at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31.
The girls division sports seven AAA teams and Westside, the No. 1-ranked AA squad. Other ranked teams are No. 1 Parkersburg South, No. 2 Greenbrier East and No. 5 University.
The first round of girls play features a showdown between a pair of top-ranked teams in South and Westside (5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30).
Other Kanawha Valley teams participating in the Big Atlantic are Hurricane (AAA boys, vs. unbeaten Parkersburg South on Jan. 31), Buffalo (A boys vs. Fayetteville on Jan. 28), George Washington (girls, vs. University on Jan. 30) and St. Albans (girls, vs. Hedgesville on Jan. 30).
