Devine cleared to play in bowl game
Advertiser

WVU tailback Noel Devine, who was said to have academic concerns according to reports, will be eligible for the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Mountaineer coach Bill Stewart told the Gazette Wednesday night that Devine would play in the bowl.

"He's out of my dog house, but still on the leash," Stewart said.

Devine's status has been a matter of speculation. In one published report, assistant coach Chris Beatty acknowledged the Mountaineers were monitoring the issue.

Bill Stewart how long is Devine's Leash? Be sure too take it off for the Bowl game and give him some good plays too run some TDs. Put Rodgers in with Devine plus put in the Big Brown Package so he can deliver on 3rd downs, short yardage, red zone situations then NC defense can not key in on Devine. Look for some Devine Thunder and White Lighting to Strike for Bowl win. If we lose Stewart will be on that Leash.

If Devine were gone, and you give Jock Sanders or Mark Rodgers the same number of touches Noel gets, I for one, unless Noel gets his act together, believe that either will give you more productivity. Who runs the fastest? Mark Rogers! Why isn't he playing? The Renaldo Turnbull Syndrome? What is that you inquire? Well, he was 3rd string at his position and talent wise should have been #1, but for some unknown reason he wasn't playing. No-one recognized the his talent level until injuries to 1st & 2nd teamers gave him his chance to play. When he got the chance to play, well, he went from 3rd string to All American virtually in 3 games. I believe Rogers (same size as Slaton) could do the same for us given the chance. His redshirt is blown, so, his talent is being wasted. From what little we've seen of him, he runs under control, attacks the seams, breaks tackles, and you just feel his effort, & that he could possibly break one, like Slaton, & not get caught from behind.

Marshall Fan - Sad is those that patrol other school's forums just to criticize when they really should just focus on the school they actually are rooting for. BUT, that being said, Noel Devine has historically (even in HS) has had issues with his grades. He has a lot of outside issues that have distracted him in the past and that is why I said congrats on his eligibility. Going to college, for some, isn't that easy even with some of the "cake" courses you can take in your first 2 years. I'm congratulating Mr. Devine on his continued growth as a person.

Now, as far as RBs - Rodgers is great. Watch him when he comes into the game. He's getting almost as many yards as Devine is when he's in. The difference is that Rodgers isn't getting the same amount of reps in practice. If he did/does, he is probably being doing just as well as Devine. However, we are desperately seeking a true FB or someone to step up into that position.
