A former Notre Dame football player transferring out of South Bend - and rumored to be landing in Morgantown - will not be attending WVU, according to Mountaineer coaches Bill Stewart and Bill Kirelawich.
Rumors have been flying that Spencer Boyd, a 5-foot-10, 186-pound cornerback from Cape Coral, Fla., was heading to WVU after a short stint with the Fighting Irish.
"I talked to his dad,'' Kirelawich said. "I told him the only way we'd take him is if he got a hardship [waiver to play this coming season]. I had our compliance guy, Patrick Hairston, and the kid's father work through the Big East.
"We laid down the ground rules and I think it was decided he couldn't [get the waiver].''
Kirelawich said he believed Boyd, a three-star recruit, would end up at South Florida. Stewart said he wanted the player as a slot receiver not as a cornerback.
"Also, I'm not giving out scholarships unless they will play,'' Stewart said. "I've got a guy like Matt Lindamood sitting there that plays and needs a scholarship.''
Meanwhile, WVU picked up its fifth commitment of the 2011 recruiting class via 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback Brian Athey of Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minn.
Athey is the grandson of Mountaineer Sports Network broadcaster and former WVU assistant coach Dwight Wallace.
