MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A West Virginia University program designed to help student-athletes with academic studies has been suspended while the school assesses its value.
Deputy Director of Athletics Mike Parsons told The Dominion Post that the evaluation of the Athletic Mentor Program is part of an assessment of all the athletic department's programs.
The mentor program brings in leaders from the community to help and tutor student-athletes. The part-time mentors are paid by the hour.
Parsons says 50 to 60 student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports teams participated in the program.
He says the program's suspension isn't related to an ongoing NCAA investigation of WVU's football program.
