MORGANTOWN - West Virginia's football coaching staff was officially filled out Wednesday with the addition of three new offensive assistants.
Each addition will mark a reunion with Dana Holgorsen, who'll be the Mountaineers' offensive coordinator in the upcoming season and will replace Bill Stewart as head coach for the 2012 season.
WVU hired Robert Gillespie as running game coordinator, Bill Bedenbaugh as offensive line coach and Shannon Dawson as inside receivers coach.
Gillespie coached running backs this season at Oklahoma State, when Holgorsen was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator. Bedenbaugh and Holgorsen were teammates at Iowa Wesleyan and were assistants under Mike Leach at Texas Tech, and Dawson was a quarterback at Wingate when Holgorsen was an assistant.
"With the official announcement today of our three new assistant coaches, our coaching staff for 2011 is complete," Stewart said. "The three new coaches are eager to get started and become a part of the Mountaineer family. I feel very confident we have two of the top coordinators in college football next year with Dana Holgorsen running our offense and Jeff Casteel heading up our defense.
"Our attention now is on recruiting until early February, and then we will start focusing on spring practice and the 2011 season."
Prior to his two-year stint with the Cowboys, Gillespie spent four years on Steve Spurrier's staff at South Carolina, first as a graduate assistant in 2005 and then as the running backs coach from 2006-08. He also handled the breakdown of the opponents(tm) blitz packages and the Cowboys run game preparation. Gillespie was part of Mike Gundy(tm)s staff at OSU, helping lead the Cowboys to an 11-2 record this past season.
Bedenbaugh spent the past four seasons at Arizona, first as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator for three years (2007-09) before being elevated to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2010. Before that, Bedenbaugh spent seven years at Texas Tech, the first three (2000-02) as an offensive graduate assistant, working with the offensive line, the next two years (2003-04) as the running backs coach and his final two years (2005-06) as the offensive line coach.
Dawson was Stephen F. Austin's offensive coordinator the past three seasons. Before that, Dawson served as the offensive coordinator at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., for two seasons. He also served as the offensive graduate assistant at New Mexico State (2005), the running backs coach at Southeastern Louisiana (2004), offensive quality control coach at Southeastern Louisiana (2003) and the wide receivers coach at Wingate (2002).
Wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway is the lone holdover from Stewart's offensive staff. The defensive staff was left intact from the 2010 season.
