While there is a lot of recognition and attention that goes with being selected in the NFL draft, one doesn't need look very far back in history, or down the stat sheet, to find significant success from an undrafted player.
Arian Foster, the NFL's leading rusher last fall for the Houston Texans, wasn't taken in the draft prior to his rookie season in 2009, even after a career at Tennessee in which he left as the school's second-leading all-time rusher.
Point being, for a handful of WVU players who didn't hear their names called in the draft over the weekend, the football future may not be as bleak as it seems.
But then again, with the NFL and its current lockout, Mountaineers players like Noel Devine, Jock Sanders, Scooter Berry, Sidney Glover, Anthony Leonard and others could be facing a tougher situation than any undrafted players in the league's history, since teams aren't allowed to sign or communicate with any current free agents.
"[The lockout] does affect me a lot, in fact it affects everybody else that wasn't fortunate enough to get drafted as well," said Leonard in a phone interview. "I talked to a few teams before the draft and eventually, when they locked the league back up, they couldn't after that.
"A lot of people are lost and jobless and have to make smart decisions about their football future and decide if they want to play in the UFL or the Canadian [Football] League and just try to get an income flowing or get something started."
It does seem reasonable that the longer the lockout stretches, the more players may run for the safety of a paycheck in the UFL of CFL. But while Leonard listed these as possibilities, he insisted that he would play the waiting game for right now.
"I have those options, but right now I'm trying to wait and pray that the league gets situated in the next month or two," Leonard said. "Right now, all I can do is compete and train and continue to work hard to be in shape for when that day comes. Assuming that everything gets started, I don't want to be out of shape. I want to prepare for when that time comes, so I can definitely be suiting up for an NFL team."
