It might be the only time Smith is ever compared to Flutie, but that's essentially the situation in which Millard finds himself - watching and learning from a veteran.

Then again, there is that part of Millard's subconscious in which he believes - realistically or not - that he might not be watching at all, that he has just as much chance to start against Marshall on Sept. 4 as does Smith.

"Right now? I don't know,'' Millard said without even a hint of a smile when asked who he thought the starter would be in September. "Whoever they say goes out there, goes out there.''

And if it's not him?

"There are plenty of years down the road when I can play,'' he said.

Briefly

  • Millard might not be a serious candidate for the starting job, but Holgorsen did point something out to him by way of his post-practice press conference Tuesday.
  • "Paul's completion percentage in practice has been better [than Smith's],'' he said. "Much better.''

  • If anything has bothered Holgorsen about practice to date it is the play of the offensive line - not the starters, but those behind them.
  • He talked about the competitiveness among the running backs, including freshmen Andrew Buie and Dustin Garrison.

"Unfortunately, [that competitiveness] doesn't exist on the offensive line,'' he said. "We've got five guys up front [in starting positions] and five guys that don't have any interest whatsoever in beating out the five guys in front of them. That's disappointing.''
