Expectations a bit high?

Just for the record, West Virginia has scored on 68.2 percent (15) of the 22 drives it has had this season, not counting a 63-second possession in which the idea was simply to run out the clock against Norfolk State. There have been 11 touchdowns and four field goals, and of the seven non-scoring drives one ended with a missed field goal inside the 20 and another on downs inside the 5, both against Norfolk State.

WVU also turned the ball over on downs near midfield against Marshall and there have been four punts - all on three-and-out possessions.

Again, that's in just the first two games - not only of the season, but of Holgorsen's tenure at West Virginia. Yes, his early games at previous stops at Houston and Oklahoma State were much flashier, and that accounts for some of the high expectations.

But know, too, that so far the offense has been fairly vanilla. Holgorsen is still operating essentially from the base plays in his offense. That will begin to change when the players progress enough to allow it to happen.

"That's one thing that we try to do offensively. Defensively, we're the same way,'' Holgorsen said. "There's some fronts and blitzes and twists and stuff that we probably haven't shown yet, but that's just the natural progression of playing football. You can't go into a game with everything. You'll blow your kids' minds.

"You try to figure out what you can handle and put it in. Once you get a little bit better at it, then you feel like moving on to being able to do a little bit more stuff. The longer I'm here and the more we have players with familiarity [in the system], probably the more variety you're going to see.''

Still, even though Holgorsen admits his own expectations are perhaps higher than those of anyone else, expecting too much too soon can be counterproductive if one allows it to be.

"Yeah, I think so,'' Holgorsen said. "No offense, but we tell coaches and players not to read anything you guys write. And there's a reason for that. When we meet as a team, all that matters is what we think of ourselves and what our abilities are as far as trying to become the best football team that we can.''

  • BRIEFLY: Freshman defensive back Terrell Chestnut won't play this season. Holgorsen said Tuesday that Chestnut had shoulder surgery and won't return until spring practice.
