Louisville had only two other legitimate scoring drives all game, one of which was set up by a shanked punt.

"We gave up a 50- or 60-yard run on third-and-2 early, but then the kids settled down,'' said defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "Bruce gave us a little bit of a spark and we started playing better on first and second downs.''

Louisville was outgained 533-351 and after those first two series gained just 200 total yards.

  • Bailey had another 100-yard receiving day, his sixth of the season, with eight catches and 118 yards.

It was a failure of a day for him, though.

"I think I had another hundred yards, but what does it matter if we lost?'' he asked.

Bailey also had a couple of rare drops.

One came in the second quarter when he dove for a long pass from Geno Smith, got to it but couldn't hang on.

The second was a potential touchdown early in the third quarter that would have given WVU a 28-21 lead and allowed the Mountaineers to take advantage of Goode's interception. But Bailey dropped the ball when a Louisville defender went up for it about 5 yards in front of him and couldn't get to the ball.

"I kind of thought it would be tipped or intercepted,'' Bailey said of the pass. "I guess I lost focus on it.''

Four plays later Bitancurt missed his first field goal attempt.

  • Jared Barber, a 6-foot, 233-pound freshman from Mocksville, N.C., saw playing time at linebacker for the Mountaineers.

"I worked hard during this week," Barber said. "I really busted my butt. Was just out there trying to make plays. It was a little nerve-wracking being a freshman, but I did the best I could."

    He finished with two tackles.

  • Among those on the WVU dress list Saturday was Arthur Johannes, a 5-11, 280-pound freshman who played at Charleston's George Washington High. He was All-MSAC in 2009. ... Louisville's blocked field goal for a touchdown was the first against WVU since 2004, when Virginia Tech's Vincent Fuller returned one 74 yards.
